A rally was held in Khamovniki against the construction of the Gorbachevskaya station on the Sokolnicheskaya Line of the Moscow Metro. 2500 people took part in the protest actions agreed with the local authorities. The rally participants believe that the opening of the station, named after the last CPSU General Secretary, is an insult to the district’s historical memory.
The station is planned to be built between the former office building of the Main Camp Administration (GULAG) and the Konstantin Rokossovsky House-Museum. The project of the facade, made in the style of constructivism, developed the famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. Members of the Khamovnichesky District Committee of the CPSU and the Cossacks of the Moscow Free Army spoke against the construction.
“Three years ago we wanted to build a church on this place, but then we defended a public garden. And now they are talking about building a station with a panel facade and a bronze portrait of Gorbachev, who will look directly at the building of our Komsomol branch. None of the residents of Khamovnikov wants the station to be named after the person responsible for the death of the USSR. Let it be better to build a church, ”said the second secretary of the Communist Party’s Khamovnichesky District Committee, Yury Titov.
Moscow authorities said that the protests would not lead to the cancellation of plans for the construction of the station. Earlier, Chinese students were not allowed to erect a monument to Gorbachev at Stanford.
